Klondike Solitaire: Game Rules and Winning Tips

Klondike solitaire is a popular version of the classic patience game. Here's how to play and some tricks to boost your chances of winning.

Getting Started

  • The Deck: A standard deck of 52 cards is used.
  • The Deal: The cards are shuffled and 28 are dealt face-up in seven piles (tableaus) on the table, with the number of cards increasing from one to seven from left to right. The remaining 24 cards form the stock pile.

The Goal

Organize all the cards into four foundation piles (one for each suit: diamonds, clubs, hearts, and spades) in ascending order (Ace to King).

Making Moves

  • Foundations: Aces are played first to their respective foundation piles. Build sequences by adding cards one higher and of the opposite color.
  • Tableaus: Move cards within the tableaus, building sequences down by alternating color. You can move multiple cards as long as the sequence follows this rule.
  • Empty Columns: Only Kings or sequences starting with a King can be placed on empty columns.
  • Stock and Waste: Cards are flipped one or three at a time from the stock to the waste pile. The top card of the waste pile can be played to the foundations or tableaus.

Tips and Tricks

  • Prioritize Aces and Twos: Move Aces and Twos to the foundations whenever possible.
  • Focus on Hidden Cards: Choose moves that reveal more cards, especially from columns with many face-down cards.
  • Think Ahead: Plan your moves to open up future possibilities.
  • Balance the Foundations: Avoid building up one suit too quickly in the foundations, as this can make it harder to reveal cards of the opposite color.
  • Use the Undo Button: In online versions, use the undo function to experiment and find the best move.
